Do I need a basement dehumidifier and an air conditioner?

A standard air conditioner does remove moister from the air, but its first concern is cool the air. To explain this I need to cover dry heat vs. wet heat. Dry heat or (sensible) is what you feel from a light bulb. Dry heat is tolerable for a short time, if you remove food your oven the air is 450F. It’s hot but tolerable if you try and put your hand in 450F boiling water you see what hot really feels like.Basement Dehumidifier

Humidity holds a lot more energy than dry air, therefore remove water is much harder that cooling the air temperature. An air conditioner will cool the air and leave most of the moister in the air. A dehumidifier has a lot more surface area so it can dry more efficiently. So back to our question if your air is cool but moist you will need a dehumidifier to dry the air.

A room that’s 60% relative humidity or higher you’re going to have a mold / mildew problem that an air condition will not fix.  If the room is at your desired temperature the air conditioner will not operate to dry out the air. An air conditioner only cares about room temperature not humidity. A dehumidifier only cares about humidity and not room air temperature. So sometimes you need both units to run at the same time in the same place.
